About five years ago I bought this hutch from a guy at the Alameda Swap Meet. It was in the condition above. The glass was new, and I paid about $140. In the years since, painting it was always on my "to do" list. Well, I can finally cross it off.
Yesterday I pulled everything out, dragged it outside, and set off to refinish it all by myself. I cleaned it inside and out with vinegar and water, then went over with a dry cloth. I didn't have any primer, but I made good use of the 5 gallons of white paint I bought for the house last summer.
462 coats of white paint later (ok, maybe it was only 4), I had the piece looking as I wanted. I used some lefter over Restoration Hardware paint, Light Silver Sage, that was used in the living room, for the inside of the cabinet.
After it was all said and done, it was put back in its home and re-filled with all of my treasures. This time, I was strategic about what I placed on the shelves and where. Over the last year, it had become a catch-all for random candlesticks, vases, and such.
The overall look is a little more country than I like, but a vast improvement from the dark room.
